Oral Surgery Q & A

What is oral surgery?

Oral surgery includes any type of surgical procedure in or around your mouth and jaw. While maxillofacial specialists typically carry out procedures involving your jaw, Dr. Wood offers several surgical treatments to restore the look and function of your teeth.

What can oral surgery treat?

Dr. Wood may recommend oral surgery if you have any of the following dental concerns:

  • Missing teeth
  • Tooth infection
  • Failed root canal
  • Failed dental implants
  • Too little jawbone to support dental implants

Before you opt for oral surgery, Dr. Wood performs a full dental exam, takes detailed X-rays, and may recommend additional scans to determine if you’re a good candidate.

Which oral surgery procedures are available?

Wood Family Dentistry offers several oral surgery procedures based on your unique needs, including:

Tooth extractions

While there are many reasons you may need a tooth extraction, the most common include:

  • Extreme tooth damage
  • Severe tooth decay
  • Overcrowded teeth
  • Broken teeth
  • Impacted wisdom teeth

Wisdom teeth removal is a common procedure to remove impacted wisdom teeth that aren’t growing in properly. When your wisdom teeth don’t emerge straight, they can get stuck beneath the gums.

To remove your impacted wisdom teeth, Dr. Wood makes an incision into your gums and uses special tools to remove them. Finally, he sutures your gums and packs them with gauze.

Root canal therapy

A root canal is a procedure that saves a tooth in danger of needing an extraction. You typically need a root canal if your tooth is infected.

During this treatment, Dr. Wood drills a small hole into your infected tooth and cleans the infection as well as your tooth’s pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. Finally, he fills the tooth chamber with a material called gutta-percha to restore it.

Dental implant

A dental implant is a small titanium post screwed into your gums and jawbone to replace your tooth roots. These implants hold your prosthetic replacement teeth firmly in place. After your implant procedure, Dr. Wood connects the implant to a dental crown or dentures.

Pinhole surgery

Pinhole surgery repairs receding gums through a small hole rather than through cutting, grafting, or stitching.
